When Sunbathers Ran From Attack, Viral Image Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected pops ringing out across the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, talking to a pair who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. This turned out to be a lifeguard, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the path that everyone was trying to escape from, and hauling that big kit and barefoot … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to move in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally full throttle sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery During Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of instances of valour in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and paramedics treating many the injured.
