New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
