The Compassion of Strangers: How a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had booked a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but straight off told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the courage or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
