Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a female high school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The armed faction breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.
Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.
Area inhabitants told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.
