California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
After a quarter-century span, every region of California is experiencing dryness. This significant achievement follows challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated blaze threats and pressured its massive agricultural sector.
An Update Indicates Zero Drought
The latest assessment from the national drought tracker illustrated that the entire state is without dry or drought conditions. This shift was driven by a period of significant storms that topped up key lakes like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their typical levels.
“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a weather expert.
Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays
Achieving this status included intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in recent years, resulting in extensive inundation, power outages, and fatalities. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.
A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average
But, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions is not the same as being out of the woods. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation place it at only about 70% of the typical level.
This mountain snow, which provides a significant portion of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for the year ahead. State experts have emphasized that it is premature to draw conclusions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” commented a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”
While the drought map indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to sustaining this precious water balance throughout the coming seasons.
