Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
